Workshop: Stiftung Katalogkunst

In the first part of this workshop we kindly ask you to visit the exhibition Schönste deutsche Bücher at the bookshop Hugendübel in Lübeck. Please choose one book which you would like to examine closer. (One book per person, two people can not choose the same book)

Take a closer look at the book and photos of the following elements (Note: a longer focal length will lead to less distorted photos. Avoid using a wide lens or any kind of fish eye!):

• Cover, Spine and Backcover //Umschlag aufgeklappt
• Blurb (sometimes on the backcover, sometimes inside) //Klappentext (mal hinten, mal in der Klappe)
• Edges (three) //Schnitt oben / unten / rechts
• Half title //Schmutztitel
• Title page //Innentitel (= Haupttitel)
• Table of contents //Inhaltsverzeichnis
• opening quote, epigraph //Widmung, einleitendes Zitat
• Imprint, copyright page, colophon //Impressum
• »Starting pages (for chapters or book sections)« //Kapitel- oder Buchteilstart(seiten)
• Page number //Seitenzahl (any)
• Running header (Lebender) //Kolumnentitel
• Headline //Überschrift (deine Lieblings-)
• Intertitle //Überschrift Ebene 2, Zwischenüberschrift
• name of the author //Autorenzeile
• Footnote (might be on the bottom or on the side of a page) or endnote //Fußnote / Marginalie / Endnote(n)
• Copy text //Mengentext
• ISBN+EAN-Code
• Publisher (maybe with a logo) //Verlagsvignette (Logo)
• type area (double spread!) //Satzspiegel (Doppelseite!)
• Specifications (Height, width, thickness), Typeface (if you dont know it, try to find out...) / Copy Text size / lineheight (no Photos – just numbers/text)
• scale reference (pick an object for reference)//Größenvergleich (mit beliebigem Objekt als Referenzgröße)
• something special //eine Besonderheit des Buches

Important:

• Please name the images as follows: [category]-[book-title]
• and use the example file as a guide
• you find reference-photos with correct file-names in this folder

Only if the files are named correctly will they be sorted in a way that allows us to work with them

Please upload them to Google Drive

In the second part please pick an element (like table of contents or imprint etc), and follow the instructions from the video-tutorial

The third part is all about the cover. Please find the video tutorial here and follow the steps while designing a neat cover for your piece.

Also don’t forget to give your catalogue a half title and a main title. You can print them the next days or on monday and just add them to your pile of sheets.
