Where are my ›Special Characters‹?

Where are my ›Special Characters‹?

You might have recognised problems with glyphs such as the apostrophe ’ or or € or german Ä Ö Ü or anything which is not part of the basic characterset ASCII.

To keep your Sonderzeichens follow these steps:

  1. Use LibreOffice(not only OpenSource but also seems to be the most powerful tool with CSV) to create your CSV-file
  2. Save As... and select CSV and check the box edit filter settings
  3. Select UTF-16 and field delimiter {Tab} String limiter "
  4. Enjoy Special Glyphs in CSV -> InDesign!

  5. Open your CSV in GoogleSheets (in your browser File -> Import)

  6. Save the file as a .xlsx (Excel file)

  7. Open the Excel file with Excel

  8. Save it as a CSV (just comma seperated, without any mentioning UTF-8)

I am working on a alternative which avoids Microsoft Excel and will let you know as soon as I find it 🛠
